Kwantlen University College - Practical Horticulture Apprenticeship

Colombie britannique

Cours offert en anglais seulement / Course offered in English only

Description

The Horticulture Apprenticeship program links learning and employment by providing apprentices the opportunity to further their education, while at the same time maintaining full-time employment in the Horticulture Industry.

Apprentices may sign a registered agreement with an employer in the horticulture field who is committed to practical on-the-job training. During the apprenticeship, students attend four six-week long technical periods for theoretical and practical instruction at Kwantlen University College in Langley. Credit for previous work experience and/or vocational training may be negotiated when the apprenticeship agreement is signed and the student is registered.

The first two years of the program teach general horticulture knowledge and skills. The instruction in years three and four focuses on one of Landscape Horticulture or Production Horticulture. The curriculum used for technical training has been developed and approved by the horticulture industry. It provides relevant, up-to-date information, and is based on recent technological advances in the horticulture field.

Journeypersons in horticulture are in demand. Municipal parks departments, golf courses, nurseries, landscape contractors, cemeteries often list a journeyperson certification as a minimal requirement when hiring horticulturists.
