Olds College - Ornemental Horticulture

Alberta

Cours offert en anglais seulement / Course offered in English only

The Ornemental Horticulture program has two majors to chose from:

Arboriculture (Tree Care)

Along with core horticulture and business training you will study the maintenance and management of individual trees and tree communities within landscaped and natural systems. Your training follows international standards of tree care and consists of a balance of theory and practical experience. The nature of the industry requires that you be in above average physical condition and well prepared for outdoor work under a variety of conditions. In order to prepare you to work safely and competently, courses in tree climbing and large tree operations will evaluate your ability to perform under realistic work-like settings.

The work experience component will help you build the total amount of experience you need to acquire Certified Arborist status from the International Society of Arboriculture. Many municipalities across North America require this certification from contractors and/or employees before allowing work to be done to their trees.

Landscape Management

This major prepares you for employment in the diverse field of landscape horticulture. You will develop and refine technical skills that underlie basic landscape maintenance and management practices. You will gain competencies in designing, building and maintaining ornamental landscapes. The nature of this industry requires that you be reasonably fit and willing to work outdoors under a variety of conditions.

The Landscape Management major is a component of the Ornamental Horticulture program. In addition to the core horticulture and management courses, you will take specialized training in computer assisted drafting (CAD), landscape graphics, landscape design, and project management. You will take advanced courses in the identification, use and maintenance of ornamental plants.
