Mentoring: Step Up Program
STEP UP – where enthusiasm meets experience.

Farm Management Canada has partnered with the Canadian 4-H Council, Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum, and Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program to unveil a new and enhanced STEP UP mentorship program. These national partners have joined forces to continue to promote best practices to build a sustainable industry, encourage entrepreneurism, and exchange innovative ideas.
Through the STEP UP Program, we’ll pair you with an experienced farm manager who will work with you in a focused Mentorship program for a minimum of eight weeks. Don’t worry – we’ve got the travel expenses all covered.
You’ll have opportunities to engage in the day-to-day management of a farm operation, see how the decisions are made, expand your professional network, and be able to get your hands dirty in the process.
STEP UP Learning Goals
The STEP UP program is an on-farm learning placement that matches beginning, transitioning, or those interested in farming with experienced farm managers in order to:
- Learn critical aspects of farm management in a hands-on setting acquiring real-life business skills.
- Provide a learning and sharing environment for both Mentor and Mentee, helping transfer skills and narrow the knowledge gap.
- Complement classroom learning with real-life experience – making decisions that matter!
- Increase Mentee awareness and adoption of beneficial management practices.
- Facilitate established farmers in getting a chance to see their business from the viewpoint of a Mentee full of creative ideas and enthusiasm.
- Increase participants’ realization of business goals.
- Note: This is not a work placement project.
