Excellence
2003 Summary Notes:
Delegates heard from a number
of speakers that demographics are changing
rapidly with more immigrants coming
to Canada from Asia.
For farmers, that means developing value-added
farm products aimed at this growing
consumer segment. Keynote speaker David
Watt, Financial Economist for BMO
Nesbitt Burns remarked, "It's
not unusual now to see sushi packaged
in large grocery stores."
Farm Credit Canada outlined its new
venture capital group to help fund new,
qualifying farming ventures; John Fast,
Executive Director of the Centre for
Family Business at the University of
Waterloo emphasized the need to express
concerns openly in family-run farm businesses;
Al Mussel from the George
Morris Centre recommended looking
at niche markets and diversification
to combat the U.S. Farm Bill; Janine
Gibson of Canadian
Organic Growers said more organic
food is now sold in grocery stores than
in health food stores; and David Boileau
of Superior
Wind Energy said farmers can earn
between $30,000 and $40,000 a year on
100 hectares of land selling energy
from wind turbines.
